Thomas Edward "The Chief" Tobias

ASHTABULA - Thomas Edward “The Chief” Tobias, 71, passed away unexpectedly at his home on March 31, 2025.

He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on August 27, 1953, the son of Harold and Joanne (Luoma) Tobias.

Tom graduated from Harbor High School in 1971. He worked on the Railroad and for Harbor Realty for many years as a real estate agent.

Tom enjoyed so many things in life.  He was a coin collector, sports cards and sports memorabilia collector. He enjoyed music, reading, gambling, and trips to the casino and racetrack; the simplicity of the sunshine in his face and enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.  He loved all the Cleveland sports teams, especially the Cleveland Indians, some of his favorite memories in life were doing anything with his children- including traveling, taking trips, playing games and especially going outside and playing catch.

He was proud of his family heritage.  Being a “Harbor Rat” and growing up in “Sweed-town”.  Tommy probably missed his calling in life and should’ve been a comedian.  For those that truly knew him, knew that his sense of humor was often times off the charts, and you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth next.  But when you really put Tom’s life into perspective, you come to realize that his family was his life. His brother and sister, his children and his wife, they meant everything to him.

He survived by his loving family; his wife, Mary “Mitzi” (DeCola) Tobias; his son Cody (Amber Adam’s) Tobias; his daughter Cassandra (Michael) Wade; his stepson Scott (Justin) Stiles-DeCola; his brand new grandson Max Edward Wade, who was born on March 9th; his brother Steve (Charlene) Tobias, and his sister Mary (Todd) Snitcher; his nephews Jason and Evan Tobias, his grand dog Ripley; many other nieces, nephews and cousins and a group of best friends that he loved like brothers.

Tom was proceeded in death by his father Harold in 2001 and his mother Joanne in 2020.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 4, 2025, at Czup Funeral Home, 1329 Lake Ave., Ashtabula. Calling hours will be from 4:00-6:00 with his funeral service starting at 6:00.
