Steven Coach Obituary

Steven Coach, 68, passed away on January 27, 2026, at the Ashtabula Regional Medical Center.

Born in Ashtabula on May 18, 1957, Steven was the son of William and Audrey (Haapala) Coach.

A lifelong resident of the area, Steve’s heart always belonged to his children and his Geneva-On-The-Lake family, where he found peace in the sun listening to live music and enjoying the kindness and comradery of his friends he called family.  You could always find Steve with his sunglasses, Indians ball cap, tapping his hand on the picnic table at Sportsterz, to his favorite band.

A 1976 graduate of Harbor High School and the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School,

Steve began working for Saybrook Township at just 16 years old. Over four decades, he served his community on both the fire and road departments, often working side by side with his father. Those years working together with his dad were among the proudest and most meaningful of Steve’s life. He retired from the township in 2016, with a career full of dedication and friendship.

Steve had a wonderful sense of humor, he was funny when he wasn’t trying to be, always worked for what he had and was that man that always helped everyone. His children were the center of his life, and he cherished every chance to spend time with them. Whether it was putting a new car engine in for one of his children, building his house, hunting for antiques, or adding another railroad lamp to his collection, Steve always approached life with creativity and curiosity.

He is survived by his loving family: his daughters, Jennifer (Joshua) Sasfy and Brittany (Ron Chambers) Coach; his son, Nick Coach; his grandchildren, Addison and Luca; and his brother, Mark Coach.

He was preceded in death by his cherished parents, William and Audrey Coach.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held in the spring, with details to be announced by the family. His memory will live on in the laughter of his children, the energy from live music in the hot summer days at the lake, and the countless lives touched by his warmth and kindness.
