Sherry Trunck Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Sherry Ann (Downey) Trunck, 56, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.  Sherry passed away peacefully on July 16th, 2026, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with metastatic melanoma cancer.

Sherry was born in Morgantown, West Virginia on August 25th, 1969, the daughter of William and Shealia Downey.  Sherry spent her childhood in New Jersey and West Virginia.  She enjoyed singing and dancing, which is how she met her husband, James Trunck Sr., whom at that time was serving in the United States Army.  They were united in marriage on January 30th, 1989, they shared thirty-seven wonderful years of marriage together. Sherry was extremely proud of being a military spouse, she supported her husband for twenty-five years until his retirement from the military in 2016. They traveled and lived in many different states where she always made new friends. She was an active member of the military spouse’s groups at every duty station.  Sherry built her life around her three sons, eight grandchildren, her service as a military spouse, and her creativity.

Sherry always found joy in life, whether it be talking on the phone to loved ones or climbing in the car to go on an adventure.  Even through her battle with cancer, she was still determined to live her life to the fullest.  Sherry was known for the love she had for her family.  She cherished seeing her family together and valued the time she had with her loved ones.  In her past time, she enjoyed photography, working on her koi pond (where she bred and raised koi fish), gardening, crocheting, cooking and canning.

Sherry is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Trunck Sr., her sons; Rusty, James Jr. and Justin (Miranda), her grandchildren: Caiden (17), Mikaila (16), Skylar (14), Alana (13), James III (10), Jaxon (9), Felicity (9) and Hunter (8); her mother, Shealia Downey; her sisters: Shelly (Jeff) McCourtney, Billie Jo Downey and Laura Jarrell-Downey and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sherry was extremely close to and loved by her in-laws; she is also survived by her mother-in-law, Barbara Trunck; her brothers-in-law, Edward (Judy) Trunck, Thomas (Leslie) Trunck and Robert Trunck; her sisters-in-law, Donna Malaney, Tina (Bill) Wilson and Maria Trunck and close family friend, Mike Wagenblast.

Sherry is preceded in death by her father, William Edward Downey and her father-in-law, Francis Edward Trunck.

Sherry always had a big heart and gave generously through her own unique and special ways. Her love remains a guiding presence for all who knew her.  She would have wanted everyone to remember a quote by Dr. Seuss, “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory”, emphasizing the importance of cherishing experiences as they happen, as their true significance often becomes clear only in hindsight.

In keeping with Sherry’s known wishes, there will not be any services held.
