Ruth E. Stehr, following 88 years of vibrant memories, passed away peacefully at home
in Ashtabula on April 10, 2024, with family by her side.
Ruth was born in Ebingen, Germany in 1935. Shortly after immigrating to the United
States with her fiancé, Rudolf, in 1958, she married him and started a new chapter in Pittsburgh,
PA. In 1966, the couple moved to Ashtabula, OH. Shortly thereafter, Ruth founded “Ruth’s
Beauty Shop,” a lively hair salon that she owned and operated within her home for over 40 years.
A fiercely independent individual with a youthful spirit of adventure and curiosity, Ruth
loved to travel and exercise and had a never-ending thirst for knowledge. A favorite pastime of
hers was walking to Highland Beach to watch sunsets, and she routinely read books at night
under the light of her favorite lamp with classical music playing for her ambience. Ruth’s
uniqueness and creativity spanned many areas in her life. She was gifted at knitting, crocheting
and crafting with a unique style, having created many beautiful original pieces and fun
alterations to existing ones, adding her own personal touch including fringe, gems, bling and
distinctive detailing to her clothes and accessories. She never left the house without her signature
rainbow pedicure, and the evergreen in her yard was always adorned with spunky ornaments that
she referred to as her “happy balls.” A competitive and fair player, Ruth had a passion for games.
She was an avid bowler for many years participating in a variety of leagues and tournaments
throughout the state. She was also a lover and reigning champion of dice games, and enthusiast
of other specialty games that she frequently played with family and friends.
Known by many as Omi (the German word for “grandmother” with a charismatic twist),
Ruth had a colorful and energetic aura that was felt by everyone that had the pleasure of knowing
her. Numerous people found her generosity and outgoing persona striking, noting that they were
drawn into her life through her fiery personality and vibrant storytelling.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Rudolf W. Stehr in 1999. She is survived by her
daughter, Helen Stehr Ash and her husband Kevin of Northwood, NH, and grandchildren Aaron
and Braelin.
Ruth’s family extends their sincerest gratitude to her close friends and neighbors for the
support given, laughs shared, and slush parties attended. They also express their deepest
appreciation for care provided by Dr. Michael Pollack of Hillcrest Hospital as well as the
compassionate caregivers of the Hospice of Western Reserve.
As per Ruth’s wishes, a private celebration of life was held for close family and friends.
