Rita “Louise” Long, also known to many as “Wheezy,” age 74, passed away peacefully at home on April 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born on January 2, 1952, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the daughter of John and Rita (Dye) Hjerpe. Louise remained a lifelong resident of Ashtabula, where she built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. She was a graduate of Harbor High School, Class of 1970.
Louise had a warm and outgoing spirit and was able to easily befriend new people everywhere she went. She loved riding motorcycles, tending to her garden, and caring for her beloved pets. She enjoyed cross-stitching, working on puzzles, and watching her favorite game shows. Louise also liked spending time bowling and playing pool with friends and family. She enjoyed golfing with her brother before his passing.
She was a proud member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and ABATE CMRO, and she served as past president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary at Post 103, as well as a past treasurer for ABATE CMRO Region 13.
She dedicated nearly 40 years of service to Alltel/Windstream before retiring. Over the course of her career, she advanced from office roles through various positions, ultimately becoming an installation and repair technician—one of the first women in the country to climb telephone poles.
Above all, Louise was a devoted and loving mother. She is survived by her children, Michelle Long and David Long, who will forever hold her in their hearts and cherish the love she gave so freely.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Hjerpe and Rita (Dye) Hjerpe, and her brother, Dale Hjerpe.
Family and friends are invited to gather for calling hours on Saturday, April 18, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Czup Funeral Home, 1320 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio. A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion Post 103, 1804 W. 19th St., Ashtabula, immediately following.
Louise will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
