Michael Lee Garbutt, 59, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026. He was
born on April 20, 1966, in Geneva, Ohio, the son of Bob Garbutt and Lona Buttermore, and
remained a lifelong resident of the area. He was married to the late Rhonda Reffner Garbutt.
Michael was a 1984 graduate of Conneaut High School and the Ashtabula County Joint
Vocational School, where he studied Machine Trades.
A gifted machinist and Special Equipment Designer and Builder, Michael worked for Fargo
Machine Co., Short Run Machine, and AAM Mold and Machine, in addition to operating his
own business. He was known for his innovative designs in automated and robotic equipment.
Michael’s talents extended far beyond his profession. He was an accomplished auto mechanic,
body repairman, and painter, and he enjoyed working on cars throughout his life. He was also a
highly skilled woodworker, creating many projects for himself and others.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rhonda, in 2024; his beloved sister, Nancy Strubbe
Bregar, in 2019; his mother, Lona Buttermore, in 2024; and half-brother Rob Garbutt, in 2021.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Mercedes Dross of Florida, and her children; his father,
Robert (Susan) Garbutt; his greataunt, Laura (Benjamin) Pierce; his brother, Gary Wonner;
nieces Erin (Marc) Bovee and Kayla Scheanon; brotherinlaw Jim Strubbe; cousins John Garbutt
and Rusty, Beth, and Perry Pierce; Rhonda’s children and sisters; and many greatnieces,
nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
In honor of Mike’s deep love for his cats, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to
Harbor Cat Rescue or Winkie Cats, so that other kitties may have the chance to be cared for and
spoiled just as his own were.
