John Roy Barnard

John Roy Barnard, 84, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2025.

He was born on July 29, 1941, in Jefferson, Ohio, the son of the late Harry and Catherine (Durkovic) Barnard.

John was a proud member of Ashtabula High School, Class of 1960.  He honorably and proudly served his country in the United States Army.

On February 10, 1968, he married the love of his life, Sharon (Rice) Barnard, and together they shared many wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and devotion.

John enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and golfing.  He played football, basketball and baseball at Ashtabula High School.  He excelled at baseball and even played shortstop for the Cleveland Mudhens.  He was a “girl dad” to 3 daughters and he adored those girls and their mom.  He felt so blessed when he took on the new title of “Papa” and his world then revolved around all of them.

He is survived by his loving children: Brenda (Scott) Marinchak, Barbara Spragg, Kelly (Adam) Lupien; grandchildren: Craig Barnard, Britni Morris, Austin (Nicole) Marinchak, Amie Pittman , Michael Taggart, Cody (Gaby) Taggart, Christopher Mixer Jr., Justin (Lindsey) Mixer, Megan (Michael) Harvey, Kourtni (Josh) Budy, Catherine Budy, and Hannah Budy; 25 great grandchildren; and his siblings: Harriet Mathieu and Carolyn (Richard) Rice.

Preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Barnard on July 10, 2001; son-in-law James Spragg; grandson, Samuel Lee Morris; and his siblings: Anna Leonard, Shirley Burns, Harry B. Jr., James, Richard, Kathleen Fisher, Naomi Welker, Judy Lynn Barnard, Robert, brother-in-law Philip Mathieu II.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, October 28, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and funeral service is Wednesday, October 29 at 11:00am; both at Czup Funeral Home 1329 Lake Ave Ashtabula, Ohio.  Burial with military honors will follow on Wednesday at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, N. Kingsville, Ohio.
