James “Jim” R. McCoy, age 89, passed away on January 5, 2026.
Jim was born on February 22, 1936, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Walter B. and Ruth E. (Rogers) McCoy. He received his elementary education at Harbor Schools and attended high school at Edgewood Schools.
In June 1954, Jim joined the United States Army and served in Germany with the 18th Combat Engineer Battalion. While stationed overseas, he earned his GED. Following his military service, Jim worked in the construction industry and later dedicated 30 years to the Ohio Department of Transportation, retiring as an Inspector of new construction projects.
Jim was deeply involved in veterans’ and community organizations. He served as Quartermaster and Adjutant for more than 30 years. He was a proud member of VFW Post 943 for over 60 years, where he also served as Commander. He was a member of American Legion Post 103 for over 25 years and a life member of the Edgewood Alumni Association, Class of 1955.
Jim is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Havens, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. INSIDE THE CEMETERY CHAPEL (due to weather) at Union Cemetery in Rock Creek, Ohio.
