Hattie Jean Story, 72, of Ashtabula, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on January 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on November 14, 1953, in Ashtabula, Hattie was the cherished daughter of John and Nina (Faulkerson) Jones, Sr. From a young age, her kind heart and joyful spirit touched everyone she met. After graduating from Ashtabula High School, she dedicated her life to caring for others as a State Licensed Nurse’s Aide. Even when facing her own health challenges, her compassion never wavered—she simply had a gift for making others feel loved and seen.
Hattie’s faith was at the center of her life. She loved her church and never missed an opportunity to praise God—especially through music. A natural performer with a beautiful voice, Hattie was the proud lead singer of the “Rhythm Masters” and graced countless other musical groups with her uplifting presence. Whether she was singing, clapping along, or humming in the kitchen, music was one of her great joys.
When she wasn’t singing, Hattie could be found surrounded by family and friends, laughing over a good card game or sharing stories that kept everyone smiling. Her loving nature and lively sense of humor made her the heart of every gathering.
Hattie leaves behind her devoted children, Derrick (Sarah) Wilson and Stephanie (Jason) Hamilton; her brother, John (Debbie) Jones; and her treasured grandchildren, Travis Wilson, Steven Wilson, and Jason Hamilton Jr. She also leaves behind her dear friend, Dallas Dinges, who brought her much happiness through the years.
She was welcomed into Heaven by her parents, John and Nina, and her siblings: Larry Jones, Jerry Jones, Barry Jones, Jancie Morale, Kathy Carroll, Suzie Taylor-Kudjuwiski, Helen Jones, Claudia Coy, and Terri Lynn Ochoa.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Hattie’s life on Saturday, January 17, at Czup Funeral Home, 1329 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio. Calling hours will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a service to follow at 5:30 p.m. Her spirit, laughter, and song will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
