Eduard "Ed" Rudolph Klimpel.
It is with great love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Eduard Rudolph Klimpel, affectionately known as Ed on December 29, 2024.
Born on October 3, 1936, in Hempstead, Long Island, Ed was a devoted husband, father, friend, and neighbor who brought kindness and wit to everyone he met.
Ed proudly served in the U.S. Army as a mail courier in post-World War II Germany during the Marshall Plan. In this role, he regularly crossed at Checkpoint Charlie, navigating the complexities of a divided Berlin with courage and dedication.
After his military service, Ed spent 33 years as a manufacturing engineer and manager for GE Lighting (1961–1994), a career he loved and took immense pride in. After retiring in 1994, he dedicated his time to his family, the animals he adored, and the hobbies that brought him joy.
An avid lover of nature, Ed found happiness feeding the birds, deer, and turkeys that frequented his yard. He was especially passionate about dogs, spending years caring for beloved family pets Buffy, Twinkie, Myles, and Tino. Right after retirement, Ed also volunteered at the Ashtabula County Animal Shelter, where he delighted in bringing treats and comfort to the dogs in need.
Ed’s love for Christmas was unmatched; his collection of Santa Clauses, Nativity scenes, and Christmas villages brought magic to the season. He had a quick wit, a kind heart, and a zest for life, always reminding those around him to "have fun, that’s the main thing," and to let go of worry because "life’s too short."
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 60 years, Phyllis Klimpel, and his beloved daughter, Jill Klimpel, as well as the family dog, Tino. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Marlene, and his many nieces and nephews, including Cris, Sandy, Pam, Karen, Eric, Todd, Thad, and Marnos, along with their spouses and children (both human, as well as dogs and cats). He was so proud of all of them.
Ed’s family invites all who knew and loved him to celebrate his life at a funeral and dinner at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on January 25, 2025. Calling hours will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 PM, followed by a service from 4:00 to 4:30 PM. His Celebration of Life Dinner will begin at 4:30 PM, where family and friends are encouraged to share cherished "Ed" stories over a meal. Additionally, a graveside service will take place later this summer in Greenville, New York, where his family is also laid to rest.
Ed will be remembered as a compassionate, caring, and kind man whose generosity and humor left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. He carried with him the saying, "Every ending is also a beginning; we just don’t know it at the time", and his last piece of advice he gave before he died was “stay steady, because at the end of the day, none of the things we worry about in life really matter”.
He will be dearly missed.
