Dwight John Smith “Smitty” of Conneaut, Ohio, age 74, passed away December 15, 2025 at
University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
He was born in Dickinson, North Dakota March 14, 1951. Although he grew up in and continued
to spend the remainder of his life in Conneaut, Ohio, Smitty had a deep affection for the place of
his birth and the history of his family in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming.
Smitty was known far and wide for his laid-back attitude, incredible sense of humor and quick
wit. He was often called upon by his Mother in Law, Kitty Osborne over the decades, during
family gatherings to tell a joke or a funny story, “C’mon Smitty, tell us a joke!”. He had a way
about him that simply made everyone happy.
His work ethic was unparalleled both at his 9-5 job at Premix, which was actually way more than
9-5 and at home on his farm. He’d worked at Premix for fifty-five years and was still working as
their scheduler until the day of his passing.
At home he lovingly helped his wife care for their horses, pup and farm seven days a week and
was always willing to jump in and help any neighbor in need whether it was digging post holes,
bailing hay, plowing driveways or giving rides wherever needed. If anyone needed help with
anything, they knew all it took was a phone call to Smitty and he’d be there with a smile, a joke,
and a hand.
Over the years, he had many interests. He always loved fishing from a young age on throughout
his life, growing up on Lake Erie. Early in adulthood, he and his wife were ham radio
enthusiasts. They were also snowmobilers then campers. They sold the camper and became
speedboaters then sailors. Once they’d scratched the sailing itch, they bought a horse then
another then built a farm where they housed their racehorses and non-racers or “homeboys” as
Smitty referred to them. Whatever his interest was throughout the years, he was always all in!
His greatest joy though was spending time with his wife, Linda. You rarely saw one without the
other. In addition to his wife, he loved simply hanging out with his daughters and grandson, as
he put it, “telling lies and playing cards.”
Smitty was an armchair history buff of the highest order and loved researching the history and
goings on of Conneaut and its residents. He was forever regaling his family with his findings.
Smitty was proceeded in death by his daughter, Kathy and his parents, Wally and Betty Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Linda (Osborne) Smith, daughters Mellisa (Smith)
Isenberg and Christine “Buffy” Smith and his favorite grandson, Remy Isenberg as well as his
sister, Alonna Adams (Steve) and brothers Harlan Smith (Karen), Loren Smith (Bev), several
nieces and nephews and of course, his beloved pup Izzi and team of horses.
Per his request, there will be no funeral service. Instead of getting dressed up and going
somewhere to be sad, please tell a joke, play a few rounds of solitaire, do a little internet
sleuthing, muck a stall, snuggle a pup, eat an ice cream cone, play cards with people you love
while telling outrageous tales and think of Smitty.
