Albert F. Cherry
Albert Franklin Cherry was born in 1931 in Durham, North Carolina and died on June 24th, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his mother Tommy Cleo Cherry (Hobbs), Father Albert L. “Buddy” Cherry, brother Ernest Odell Cherry and nephew Michael Cherry.
He is survived by his wife Betty-Lou Cherry of 55 years and son Kevin Cherry, grandchildren including Brian, Michael, Isabella, and Christopher, sister Betty Bullard (Mrs. Amos Murray) of Autryville, North Carolina, brothers Charles Cherry of Breckenridge, Minnesota, Philip Cherry (wife Patricia) of Autryville, North Carolina, Jenny Cherry (wife of Ernest Odell Cherry) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Jenny Cherry (wife of Ernest Odell Cherry) of Greensboro, North Carolina.
Albert’s early years (0-6) were spent in Durham North Carolina; He then moved to Sampson County North Carolina and lived as a tenant farmer, farming tobacco and cotton until joining the Air Force at age 17.
Albert volunteered for the Korean war but was sent to Morocco to serve in North Africa. He went on to serve as a paratrooper in the Army where he had 133 jumps and deployed to Germany. Al spent time in the Army Reserve Special forces where he enjoyed parachuting out of helicopters, mountaineering training in Georgia, and jungle training in Panama. He finished his military career as an Armored Cavalry Scout in the Ohio Army National Guard.
Al earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Greensboro college in North Carolina and did master’s work at Edinboro in Pennsylvania.
Early on Al worked for the Greensboro North Carolina juvenile probation department. He then joined the American Red Cross and worked in Charleston South Carolina, Ankara Turkey, and Manheim Germany. Al finally settled down with his family in Ashtabula, Ohio where he worked for the state for 31 years as an adult parole and probation officer.
Al’s hobbies include exercise at the YMCA, running, swimming, tennis, playing baseball, chopping wood, and cycling. He was an avid dog lover and enjoyed breakfast at McDonalds. On TV he enjoyed Dr. Who, Kung Fu, Current events, Clint Eastwood, and Chuck Norris movies.
Al passed peacefully at home on June 24, 2024. No funeral service is scheduled in Ashtabula, Ohio. Interment at a military cemetery is to be determined.
