Wanda Bates-Rose

ASHTABULA-Wanda Bates-Rose, 79, passed away on January 30, 2022, at UH Geneva Medical Center following a brave battle with COVID-19.

She was born in Ivanhoe, Virginia on January 1, 1943, the daughter of Jesse and Georgia Branscome.

Wanda was known as both feisty and fierce; she would never back down from debating topics that she felt strongly about.  Her passion for politics, both locally and nationally will always be one of the things she will remembered for; along with her quick wit, sense of humor, and comedic “one-liners”.  Those that truly knew Wanda will remember her for her kind and generous heart.

She is survived by her loving family: her daughter Robin Dioneff; her granddaughters: Felecia Dioneff and Marissa Dioneff; her two very dear stepdaughters that she loved as her own, that remained very close to her: Sharon Meara and Cindy Kyko; numerous stepchildren from the Rose and Bates families; her sister Betty Burnside; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved cats: Nutty and Noland “No-No”.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son Jay Bates; her husbands: Joseph Rose, John Bates and Larry Hewitt; her granddaughter Amy Meara; and her siblings: George, Dick, Frank, Kenny, and Norman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 12:00 at Mother-of-Sorrows Catholic Church, 1464 W. 6th Street, Ashtabula.  The family will receive guests from 11:00-12:00 at the church prior to the Mass.  Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
