Shirley Ann Gruey

November 1, 1928 — October 15, 2023

Ashtabula

Shirley Ann Gruey, 94, years of age, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at 3:00 a.m. on October 15th, 2023. She in her own words lived “a life worth repeating a thousand times over.”

Shirley Gruey will be remembered by all as a devoted and loving matriarch to the family she created with her one true love, Paul Carlteon Gruey. Married, March 7, 1949, they began their family together in a small house at Haywood Beach. After retirement, they spent the rest of their lives at “The Lake House”, also at Haywood Beach. They shared a once in a lifetime love for one another and created a once in a lifetime family.

Shirley leaves behind: her loving and faithful brother, Thomas (June); her beloved children: Richard, Robert, Susan (Anthony Jaszczuk) and John, who were the purpose and meaning of her life; her grandchildren: Megan, Erin, Kaci (Brian Hurt), Kelly, Molly, John (Julia), Andrea, Shari (Matt Trigo), Lyndsey (Nelson Torres), David (Ciara), Ben, Sarah, Zac and Patience who were endless sources of joy in her life; her great grandchildren: Leven, Olivia, Jameson, Arlo, Jayden, Abegail, Ryan, Isabela, Shaya, Iris, Madrone and Makoa who were the wonders in her life, who kept her going in her later years.

Shirley joins her beloved Paul; her son, Mark and his wife, LaVerl; her parents Lyle and Nina; her sister, Barbara Comp; her brothers, Richard and David in what comes next.

While her family is heartbroken at Shirley's passing, her strength of character, unparalleled ability to spread love and joy and dedication to her family through all of their shared struggles, will continue to guide and strengthen them for years after her passing. The true meaning of living a Sisu Life.

As to her wishes, Shirley’s ashes have been united with her husband, Paul's, so they shall remain in death as they were in life.

The family of Shirley Gruey would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Hospice of the Western Reserve, who helped Shirley pass on gracefully.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Hospice of Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio, 44004.
